Whether it’s an inherited ring, a resale purchase, or a stone that sparkles a little too aggressively, here’s what home tests can and can’t tell you, the myths to ignore, and what actual proof looks like.
Home Checks That Tell You Something

The fog test — breathe on the stone. Diamonds disperse heat instantly, so fog clears in a second or two; glass and many simulants stay misted longer. Quick, free, and roughly indicative.

The sparkle check — real diamonds return brilliant white light with flashes of rainbow fire. Glass looks dull; cubic zirconia throws exaggerated rainbow confetti. Compare next to a known diamond if you can.

The read-through test — place a loose stone flat-side down on newsprint. If you can read letters through it, it’s almost certainly not a diamond — properly cut diamonds bend light too much.

The setting check — real diamonds are rarely set in fake metal. Check the hallmark (750 = 18K gold; our gold hallmark guide (/blogs/news/how-to-tell-if-gold-is-real-hallmarks-dubai) explains them all): quality metal doesn’t prove the stone, but costume metal around a “diamond” is a loud warning.
The Myths
The scratch test (“diamonds scratch glass”) ruins jewellery and proves little — many simulants also scratch glass. The water test (“real diamonds sink”) mostly measures density of anything heavy. And “diamonds don’t chip” is false — they’re the hardest natural material, but hardness isn’t toughness. Retire these.
The Moissanite Problem
Modern moissanite defeats every home test — it fogs like diamond, sparkles harder than diamond, and even fools basic thermal testers. Distinguishing it takes a jeweller’s electrical tester or trained eye (its double-refraction gives a subtle blur under magnification). This is why home tests screen, but never certify.

A certificate from an independent laboratory — GIA is the global benchmark — documents a specific stone: its 4Cs decoded in our 4Cs guide, measurements, and often a laser inscription on the girdle matching the report number. Many certified stones can be verified online against the lab’s database in seconds.
